Volunteer - Tanzania

Before starting at DePaul, I decided to spend time in Tanzania, Africa. I lived with a host family and spent my days teaching English and Mathematics in an orphanage. I was able to become fully immersed into their culture and their language of Swahili. This was one of my first experiences working with ELLs.

Arusha, Tanzania

I compiled a few short video clips from my experience in Tanzania. These show the children and families I worked with. As well as other adventures I traveled.

Heartland Refugee Alliance

I volunteered as a teacher at the Heartland Refugee Alliance in Ravenswood. I worked part-time in a preschool class and spent the rest of my time with middle school aged children. All children and families were new to the United States, fleeing from their countries. There was a range of five different languages and cultures. I focused on creating a language rich environment that prepared them for the school year.
